Course Information
Overview:
IPAF PAL+ is the recognised advanced qualification for experienced mobile elevating work platform operators who need to work safely in challenging environments. It extends the standard PAL categories with additional theory and practical training on machine stability, ground conditions, confined-space access and complex lifting scenarios commonly encountered on UK construction, maintenance and industrial sites. The course prepares operators to select the correct machine, carry out thorough pre-use checks and apply enhanced control techniques while maintaining compliance with the Work at Height Regulations.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for:
- Experienced IPAF PAL card holders who regularly work on uneven terrain or in restricted areas
- MEWP operators required to use boom or scissor lifts with specialist attachments
- Site supervisors and managers overseeing powered access operations in complex environments
- Maintenance and facilities teams working at height in industrial or confined settings
- Contractors needing PAL+ endorsement for specific client or tender requirements
What You Will Learn
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Advanced pre-use inspection and function checks for multiple MEWP categories

Frequently Asked Questions
Most commonly asked IPAF PAL+ questions:
The standard IPAF PAL+ course is delivered over one full day, combining theory sessions with practical exercises and assessments.
Delegates must already hold a valid IPAF PAL card with the relevant categories they wish to extend to PAL+ level.
Training and assessment typically cover 1B+, 3B+ and other categories where the delegate requires advanced competence, depending on the training centre's equipment.
Assessment includes a written theory test and a practical demonstration of advanced operating skills on each category being assessed.
Delegates who do not meet the required standard receive feedback and can usually re-sit the failed element, often on the same day or a later agreed date.
The PAL+ endorsement is valid for five years from the date of successful completion, after which a refresher course is required.
While prior experience is essential, the course is designed for operators who already use MEWPs regularly and need to extend their skills to more demanding environments.
Delegates should bring their existing IPAF PAL card, photo ID, suitable safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and, where required, their own harness and lanyard.
PAL+ adds specific training and testing on advanced stability, ground conditions, confined-space access and emergency procedures that are not included in the basic PAL categories.
Yes, the qualification is accepted by most principal contractors and clients requiring evidence of advanced powered access competence.
Yes, holders of a current PAL card can attend PAL+ training at any point during the five-year validity period to add the advanced endorsement.
The course prepares operators for work on sloping ground, soft terrain, indoor confined spaces, areas with overhead restrictions and sites requiring specialist machine positioning and recovery techniques.
Prices per person typically start at £295. Discounts available for multi person or group bookings (depending upon location)
More Information
