Successful delegates receive an IPAF PAL (Powered Access Licence) card valid for five years. The card records the categories trained and is accepted by most UK contractors and principal contractors. Refresher training is required before expiry to maintain the qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most commonly asked IPAF Operator questions:

The standard course lasts one day for a single category or two days when multiple categories are included. The exact duration depends on the combination of MEWP types selected.

Delegates can train on 3a vertical scissor lifts, 3b mobile boom lifts and other common categories such as 1b and 1a depending on the training centre and delegate requirements.

No formal previous experience is required, although familiarity with working at height or site environments helps delegates progress through the practical elements more confidently.

Delegates must demonstrate pre-use checks, safe operation on different ground conditions, smooth platform control and correct emergency procedures under assessor observation.

The PAL card is valid for five years from the date of successful completion. A refresher course must be completed before the card expires to remain compliant.

Yes. The IPAF PAL card is widely accepted across UK construction, maintenance and industrial sites as evidence of operator competence.

Delegates should wear suitable work clothing, safety footwear and bring a passport-style photograph for the PAL card. A valid form of photo ID is also required for registration.

Yes. Additional categories can be added later by completing a shorter conversion module at an IPAF-approved training centre.

IPAF training follows a consistent national standard with practical machine time and independent assessment. Other schemes may focus on specific machine brands or narrower operating environments.

Training includes realistic scenarios such as operating on slopes, working near overhead obstructions and performing controlled emergency descents.

Delegates who do not meet the required standard receive feedback and can usually re-sit the failed elements after further practice or a short top-up session.

Yes. A one-day refresher course covering theory updates and practical assessment is required to renew the PAL card before the five-year expiry date.

Prices per person typically start at £185. Discounts available for multi person or group bookings (depending upon location)
